The above photo is an example of a cymbidium grown only in fresh horsemanure with a covering of sphagnum moss.  Water was given freely every day, but the medium and the pot allowed free drainage.
Nothing else was added, the horsemanure providing all the requirements for this prolific result.
If you are an orchid lover and have access to a source of horsemanure, it's not difficult to have great plants.

Nic said, "Try it. It will take you longer to count your flowers".

Nic's comment on Disa requiring a buffer in the medium prompted many people to ask for photos of Disa in horsemanure.  Here are some examples.
The top half of the pot has s
phagnum and this provides the buffer.

Here is a Pleione formosana grown in horsemanure.  The 2002 bulb had 3 spikes with a flower.  Every spike produced a very big new bulb and in 2003 every bulb produced 2 flowers.

This photo was sent to Nic by Guillermo Angulo from Colombia.
It shows two Phalaenopsis, grown as a trial, after hearing of Nic's method.
They were planted the same day, same height, two years before the photo was taken.
The left one, (43 cms) in charcoal and pine bark.
The one on the right, (76 cms) using only horse manure

More Disas These two photos of a sphacelatum were sent in by Paula Vagner of Boca Raton, Florida USA. The photo at left was taken in 2004 when the plant had 7 flower spikes. Then Paula added horsemanure. The photo at right shows the spectacular result in 2005. The plant is almost twice the size and has 22 flower spikes.

paph

Julie in Caracas reported on the successful repotting of Phaps with horse manure.

Julie wrote: "Several months ago as suggested by you I introduced horse manure in my plants and today I report that my Phaps are growing like crazy and with buds and that Phap. Ruby Dust Heart of Gold has finally flowered".
